सुभाषितम्

पदस्थितस्य पद्मस्य मित्रे वरुणभास्करौ ।
पदच्युतस्य तस्यैव क्लेशदाहकरावुभौ ॥

(शार्ङ्गधरपद्धतिः)

padasthitasya padmasya mitre varuṇabhāskarau ।
padacyutasya tasyaiva kleśadāhakarāvubhau ॥

पदच्छेदः

पदस्थितस्य, पद्मस्य, मित्रे, वरुणभास्करौ, पदच्युतस्य, तस्य, एव, क्लेशदाहकरौ, उभौ ।

तात्पर्यम्

कमलपुष्पं स्वस्थाने यदा भवेत् तदा वरुणः सूर्यश्च तस्य मित्रे भवतः । किन्तु कमलं यदि स्थानभ्रष्टं भवति तर्हि तौ शोषयतः ।

आङ्ग्लार्थः

When a lotus is in its position (strong and attached to the plant in the pond), (even) Varuna (the Rain God) and Bhaaskara (the sun), are its friends. When it is detached (fallen) from its own place, they both become (its torturers), by pelting with water (till it decays) or scorching it with heat (till it withers off).
